MENTONE — Several events have been scheduled and donation options set up following the Oct. 30 tragedy in Fulton County where three children lost their lives and another one was seriously injured while crossing a road to board their school bus.
Indiana State Police say a school bus was stopped on SR 25 with the stop arm and exterior lighting activated in front of a mobile home park at 4684 North SR 25. As children crossed the road to get on the bus, four of the kids were struck by a Toyota Tacoma reportedly driven by Alyssa Shepherd, 24, Rochester.
Alivia Stahl, 9, and her twin brothers, Mason Ingle, 6, and Xzavier Ingle, 6, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. Maverick Lowe, 11, was airlifted to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne and remains hospitalized. The three siblings attended Mentone Elementary School. Lowe attends Tippecanoe Valley Middle School.
A candlelight vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at the Mentone Youth League, 107 W. Jefferson St., Mentone. Community members are urged to gather together to honor the three siblings who lost their lives and to offer continued support for Lowe.
Lake City Bank and Mentone Fire Department have set up an account to accept donations for the families. Anyone who would like to donate may go to any Lake City Bank branch and mention the account name, “Mentone Fire Department Valley Strong.” Checks may also be mailed to the Mentone Fire Department, C/O Valley Strong, P.O. Box 147, Mentone, IN. 46539. Please make checks out to MFD Valley Strong.
Milwaukee Iron Clubhouse, Kokomo, has partnered up with the Mentone Fire Department to organize a motorcycle ride from 12-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3. Large groups of motorcycles are expected to ride by the Mentone Fire Station to drop off donations.
“We’re here to serve the community. We’re trying to heal our people and the community,” said Mentone Fire Chief Mike Yazel. “We have a good crisis team in the county and they were waiting on us when we returned (from the scene).”
“It’s been a very rough time for everyone,” Yazel said. “We take care of each other pretty well.”
A BBQ dinner benefit will be held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Tippecanoe Valley High School auxiliary gym. All monies raised at this event will go toward funeral and medical expenses and other needs of the families.
For more information about the BBQ dinner benefit, please contact Mentone Fire Chief Mike Yazel at (574) 551-7687 or Mentone Town Marshal Jim Eads at (574) 371-5947.
Our monthly Monday movie this month is “Pumpkin Pie Wars” featuring Julie Gonzalo and Eric Aragon. We’ll have the movie in our Large Conference Room and we’ll provide the popcorn.
Ten years ago, Faye and Lydia each opened their own bakeries in Emeryville, Ohio, after a personal and professional fall-out during a local Pumpkin Pie contest. Now their children – and co-workers – Casey and Sam, are set to carry on the rivalry as they go head-to-head in the same contest. There’s only one problem for these two people who are supposed to hate each other: they start to fall in love.

This online resource is organized into sections that focus on discussions of each body system and its specific disorders, or that focus on a special topic of significance in veterinary medicine, such as behavior, exotic and laboratory animals, management and nutrition, or toxicology.
Coverage is straightforward and practical, with explicit recommendations given for treatment whenever possible. The succinct discussions also serve to give users enough information so that they have a good foundation for seeking out and understanding more detailed information available elsewhere.
Results of a recent survey by Merck Manuals, Inc, indicate that some of the most important barriers to increasing medical knowledge are an overabundance of online medical information, coupled with the inability to judge the accuracy and reliability of online sources.
YOUR Library now has online access to both the consumer and professional version of this resource.
To remedy this issue, Merck Manuals Inc, a trusted source of medical knowledge since 1899, has launched Global Medical Knowledge 2020 – a global plan to provide the most current and reliable medical information for nearly 3 billion consumers and medical providers by 2020.
